When you whant to give someone advice, or if you whant to say that someone needs to do something, than you can use the next verbs.

can / could / should / might + full verb


You can ask her if she wants to come.         Kunnen   Je kunt haar vragen of ze wil komen.

You could say you're sorry.             Zou kunnen       Je zou sorry kunnen zeggen.

You might try it.          zou kunnen     Je zou het kunnen proberen

She should see a doctor.           zou moeten   Ze zou naar de doktor moeten gaan.


look out: these verbs haven't all a just as strong meaning should is the strongest: if you use it, it gives you in fact a command.

Might is the weakest: if you use it, it gives you that something is uncertain or that you doubt.


You might ask Howard to give you a hand.              Je zou Howard misschien kunnen vragen om je te helpen.

You could ask Howard to give you a hand.          Je kunt Howard vragen om jet te helpen.

You should ask Howard to give you a hand.           Je zou Howard moeten vragen om je te helpen.
