in English, there is a difference between de and het not: all the verbs gain 'the'

examples

the dog is small             de hond is klein.

the house is large          het huis is groot.

but there is a difference between ' a ' and ' an'. in Dutch it is always 'een'.

Freddy has a car           freddy heeft een auto

Freddy has an apple     freddy heeft een appel.

you use ' a ' for words you speak with a consonant at the beginning, and you use "an" for words that you speak with a vowel at the beginning.

examples:

a house  = een huis                           an hour                        een uur

a unit = een hoofdstuk                       an apple                      een appel.

a year = een jaar                               an umbrella                 een paraplu

a nose = een neus                            an elbow                    een elleboog
