If a verb ends in a consonant + y, then changed the-y in-i in the past simple.

to carry                    he carried the bag for me this morning                                            hij droeg vanmorgen de tas voor mij

WATCH OUT!!!!!                      changed nothing if the verb ends in a vowel +-y

to play                        They played the piano last night                                          ze speelden gisteravond piano

If a verb ends in a-e, then there will be only a-d in the past simple behind.

to live                        he lived in los angeles   in 1956                                      hij leefde in los angeles in 1956

to fake                       i faked my pain                                                               ik nepte mijn pijn


in the past simple is the last consonant of the verb doubled as one vowel

drop                           i dropped my drugs when i saw  the cops                                    ik liet mijn drugs vallen toen ik de politie zag

prefer                        mirthe preferred fish and chips                                                     mirthe had liever vis met friet.
